TESTIMONIALS

I have a wife with bulimia and it was getting to the point where I couldn't take it any more. She needed bulimia treatment badly, but I didn't know where to turn. Through the internet I came across your site and sent my wife for bulimia treatment at your center.

Whoever she first spoke with made her feel so comfortable, she even became excited about the possibility of not having to binge and purge any more. The change in her is amazing. I know she will always be recovering, but I am proud to say she is the most courageous person I know. Thank you for all of your help.

-- Preston V., Nashua, New Hampshire

I needed to find an eating disorder clinic so badly. I used to eat compulsively and had swung over completely to purging and laxatives. I felt so bad about myself, the shame and guilt was just killing me. I had been to an eating disorder clinic before, but they really did not address my mood swings, that I have since understood them to be a bipolar disorder.

Your staff kept telling me that my eating behavior was a symptom of other problems. Well even though I didn't believe them they turned out to be right. I don't use laxatives, I have even learned to exercise moderately. Thank you so much. By the way, it has been ten months since I last purged.

Well Shelly, I told you I would write when I had one year in recovery and here I am. Who would have guessed. I have so much gratitude for you taking your time and referring me to a great facility. I knew from the moment I walked in there that I was in the right place. The next time I come by it will be to visit, not as a patient. You are absolutely the greatest.

What is a Panic Attack?

A panic attack is a symptom of panic disorder, a type of anxiety disorder involving periods of very sudden, intense feelings of overwhelming fear. Panic attacks can occur without warning and are not a normal reaction to stress. People with panic attacks can experience the following when there is no actual threat and for no obvious reason:

  • Nausea
  • Shortness of breath
  • Heart palpitations
  • Dizziness
  • Chest pains
  • Headaches

Panic attacks can be so frightening and disabling that the person may start to avoid situations or locations where previous attacks have occurred.

Panic Attack Treatment at the Women's Center for Healthy Living

Experiencing a panic attack can leave a person feeling overwhelmed, anxious, and terrified. Sometimes patients cope with their attacks by turning to drugs or by eating or restricting food intake which puts them at risk for even more complications.

Fortunately there are safe and effective panic attack treatment options available. At The Women's Center for Healthy Living our staff is fully trained to provide simultaneous eating disorder and panic attack treatment. This type of dual diagnosis approach not only helps patients learn how to control their attacks, but also addresses the deep rooted issues surrounding their eating disorder. By working on both disorders concurrently, patients have the best chance for long-term recovery.

Understanding Panic Attack Treatment

A combination of psychological treatments and medication is the most effective type of panic attack treatment. Cognitive-behavioral therapy helps change the patient's way of thinking when it comes to panic attacks, and can help them identify possible triggers for the attacks.

Panic attack treatment sometimes uses behavioral "exposure" therapy as well, which gradually exposes patients to the triggers—places, objects or situations—that are part of their panic attacks. Done with the guidance of a therapist, patients can then change their behavior or reaction to such triggers.

Anti-anxiety medications, antidepressants and sometimes beta blockers can also be prescribed during treatment to help the patient control symptoms.

At The Women's Center for Healthy Living, we specialize in helping people receive the highest quality treatment for panic attacks and co-occurring eating disorders. To learn more, call our toll-free number at 1-800-941-5313. Caring counselors are standing by 24/7 to take your confidential call.
