What are Compulsive Overeating Programs?
Compulsive overeating programs, binge eating programs or food addiction programs are all designed to treat someone for their high consumption of calories and food. This type of overeating can occur throughout the day or in one extended episode. Most people entering a compulsive overeating program report they constantly lie about the amount of food they eat, eat alone, consume large amounts of sugar and refined flour products and suffer from depression. This is not unusual as the compulsive eater tries to self medicate through the use of food which creates a never ending cycle for them
Philosophy for Compulsive Overeating Programs
Compulsive overeating programs usually view compulsive overeating as an addiction to food types such as those high in sugar or refined flour. As with any addiction, the first thing to do is discontinue the use of self destructive substances. In many cases this period of time in the compulsive overeating program will be referred to as detox and patients will be assisted to cope with their cravings and mood swings.
When the patient is medically stable, they will enter a phase of treatment where they will begin to explore the root cause of their compulsive overeating. As this is being accomplished, patients will be introduced to 12 step programs and the addiction philosophy they embrace.
Treatment within a compulsive overeating program is based on the premise that compulsive overeating is an addiction that is progressive and chronic. Medical problems associated with compulsive eating such as; diabetes, cardio vascular disease, high blood pressure or kidney and liver problems can be fatal if left untreated.
