For many years compulsive eating disorders were treated with diets. One after another, people went on diets only to lose weight and gain it back. They didn’t realize that what they were dealing with was an addiction and psychiatric disorder. Due to the binge cycles, medical problems and a person’s need for compulsive eating disorder treatment, residential or inpatient eating disorder treatment was usually warranted.
A compulsive eating disorder is the same as binge eating disorder and would be treated the same way. It is not uncommon for an individual with a compulsive eating disorder to be resistant to eating disorder treatment. They do not consider themselves sick, just overweight. Unfortunately, many have to experience chronic medical or emotional problems before the denial is broken and they are open to treatment for a compulsive eating disorder.
